CERT Basic Training: The purpose of this Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Course is to provide citizens with the basic skills needed during a major disaster. This training will allow graduates to respond to the immediate need of their community in the aftermath of a major disaster - the time when emergency services may not be immediately available. By working together, CERT members can assist in saving lives and protecting property by implementing the basic techniques taught in this course.
Course Outline:
SkyWarn: SKYWARN is a concept developed in the early 1970s that was intended to promote a cooperative effort between the National Weather Service and communities. The emphasis of the effort is often focused on the storm spotter, an individual who takes a position near their community and reports wind gusts, hail size, rainfall, and cloud formations that could signal a developing tornado. Another part of SKYWARN is the receipt and effective distribution of National Weather Service information.
CPR with AED: This course teaches the basic techniques of adult CPR, the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), barrier devices in CPR and first aid for choking.
Radio Operation: In the event of a large disaster we may not have access to landlines or cellular phones. This training will help train us on effective radio procedures/etiquette amongst our teams during a disaster through the use of FRS or Handheld radios.
HAM Radio License: Hams enter the hobby as Technicians by passing a 35-question multiple-choice examination. No Morse code test is required. The exam covers basic regulations, operating practices, and electronics theory, with a focus on VHF and UHF applications. Technician Class operators are authorized to use all amateur VHF and UHF frequencies (all frequencies above 50 MHz). Technicians who pass a 5 WPM Morse code examination are entitled to limited power outputs on certain HF frequencies. "Technicians with HF" may operate on the 80, 40, and 15 meter bands using CW, and on the 10 meter band using CW, voice, and digital modes.
